About our club
Originally, when the club was first formed, it was called “The Metropolitan Jersey Shetland Sheepdog Club”. It held its first meeting August 12, 1964 with 17 people attending. By the time we held our first point show the club was re-named “The Shetland Sheepdog Club of Northern New Jersey”.
Our first Specialty Show and Sweepstakes was held in conjunction with The Plainfield Kennel Club on May 27, 1973. We moved from holding our show in conjunction with an all breed club to an independent specialty show. In 2006 we held our first evening specialty show, in 2007 held one of the first back-to-back same day specialties.
On April 1, 1979 we held our first Obedience Specialty. Today, although we no longer hold an independent obedience specialty, our Club supports the obedience and rally-o sheltie exhibitors by offering trophies at the Palisades Kennel Club show. At some point in the future we hope to be able to offer performance events. Over the past several years the club has put on herding, agility, and rally clinics.
Our membership consists of breeders, conformation and performance exhibitors and companion dog owners. Several times a year the Club has speakers come and talk on topics of interest to our members. We meet on the first Friday of the month from September thru June in Scotch Plains, NJ. All our meetings are open to anyone who would like to come. We hope that you will join us.
